Little Lyell Machines is a generative code work exploring historical mining narrative and the capacity for story within an algorithm. The digital code embeds text fragments from the archives of a 19th century mine in Tasmania’s west coast wilderness. Each unique output is operated by the viewer like a ‘slide’ that is inserted into a microfiche or View-Master, a field of rubble containing detailed information made visible through the machine. A system to bring fragments into one story, as history does.

Release: Wild Residency (October 2023), 150 generative outputs. Companion book published in 2024.

Operation: Interactive on desktop and mobile
